How You Breathe Matters
"Pull your shoulders back."
"Suck it in!"
"Lift it up."
Sound familiar? When it comes to posture and breathing, there are many common messages that are not very helpful. Over time, we can develop breathing patterns that don't serve us well. This can happen for many reasons including injury or outdated posture cues. Breathing is where I begin with almost all of my patients - from age 16 to age 90. Back pain, neck pain, pelvic pain, or balance, breath is the foundation. Shoulder pain? Elbow pain? Yes, breathing first. Pain can change breathing very quickly, and one of the most common compensations for movement is breath holding.
