Polyvagal Theory & Yoga

Polyvagal Theory & Yoga

Many of the workshops I teach center around the nervous system with a focus on sympathetic & parasympathetic systems, the vagus nerve, and polyvagal theory. In many of the events, I've shared a groundbreaking article by Sullivan, et al (full listing below) as pre-workshop reading. Students commented on its difficulty and density. It contains scientific theory, yoga philosophy, and plenty of terminology. It's challenging, and it requires time and concentration, reading and rereading.

I'd like to be your guide for this topic and this article. I'll share an overview of the nervous system and polyvagal theory, and then we'll dig in and discuss the article. We'll cover the terms and concepts of the article, the connection of science and yoga, and share applications.

The bottom line is: what does this look like in your yoga classes? How are you going to apply it?

Whether you love the details of anatomy/science/theory or they make you want to run for the hills, there's also yoga philosophy directly tied to the concepts. And the application of the information? I promise you, that part is simple.

There will be a worksheet to go with the article that will guide you through terminology and main ideas. This will help you break down the concepts and assist you in preparing for the discussion. There will also be a list of podcasts, articles, and videos to listen to/read/watch before we meet.

Join me for an in-depth look at this illuminating & inspiring topic!

Testimonials

Jen thoughtfully prepared a progressive course that layered an understanding of nervous system anatomy, social implications of the anatomical stimulations, yoga philosophy that paired with the two former components, and completing with applications to teaching yoga. This order was both informative as well as easily digestible.

After these short two and a half hour course I have a greater grasp on how to add elements into my teachings that are supportive to the nervous system while being able to incorporate philosophy teachings. Jen really took advantage of our time in a way that was both packed full and yet not overwhelming.
